Low Back Pain

Over two thirds of Americans experience low back pain (1).   Unfortunately many Americans give up and choose to live with the pain, limiting their quality of life significantly.  The good news is Acupuncture has been shown to be a safe and effective treatment.

Who Recommends Acupuncture for Back Pain?

The American Pain Society,  American College of Physicians and  American Academy of Family Physicians all recommend acupuncture for back pain relief (2,3).  The WHO (World Health Organization) also lists acupuncture as an effective treatment for low back pain (4).

How Effective Is Acupuncture In Treating Back Pain?

German Scientists conducted a Randomized Clinical trial to test Acupuncture efficacy in treating low back pain.  Not only was Acupuncture found to be an effective treatment for chronic lower back pain, it was found to be twice as effective as conventional treatment(5)!

How does Acupuncture help?

Acupuncture has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine dating back over 3000 years.   However, there has been an increasing amount of research exploring its physiological effect in modern context.   Acupuncture has been found to result in

  • Decrease in Substance P , the bodies pain and inflammation promoter
  • Increase Beta-Endorphin level ,the bodies pain and inflammation reducer (6)

While the exact mechanism of action is still being explored, it is important to keep the key facts in mind;  Acupuncture is safe and it works.
